“Do it now…”

“Do it now…”

Another volleyball season is in the books.

A fun, special one at that! More about that another time…

At the end of each season, I am faced with a newfound commodity.

Time.

For the past four months, almost every minute of my day has been planned and executed (including most weekends).

Having two full time teaching head coaches in the same season and a one and a half year old meant that everything from meals to outfits needed to be scheduled.

Meal prepping for two weeks at a time.

Working out in the minutes I had between classes.

Planning practice at 4:45am.

All so that I could fit everything in.

Now, time has opened up a little bit.

The equivalent of 30-40 hours a week of planning, practicing, traveling, and competing.

But I’m finding myself having to rely on a certain principle even more now than I did before.

“Do it now…”

My subconscious caught on pretty quickly that I now have a little more time.

“Go ahead and just take a seat before you get to your workout.”

15 minutes later I’m checking emails and trying to convince myself to just do the workout later.

“Sleep in a little. You deserve it.”

And there I lay, wrestling with myself on how many times I can press snooze and still get a little work done in the morning.

Turns out, when I have no choice in the matter, it’s easier to do the things of importance.

Across all four dimensions: Mind. Body. Business. Relationships.

All do better when I decide to “do it now.”

No waiting. No negotiating. No convincing myself to do something else.

Bank that mind asset now and read for 15 minutes.

Get the workout done now, and don’t worry about it for the rest of the day.

Spend first moments through the door reading or going on a walk with Charlee, rather than tending to the to-do list.

Do it now.

Don’t wait to get the most important things done.

Because, as Eisenhower famously said,

“What is important is seldom urgent and what is urgent is seldom important.”
