“But it’s a holiday…”
Shared by Breanne Smedley
On Christmas morning this year, well before Charlee was awake, Brett and I were doing what most (I’m come to learn) find odd at 5:30am on Christmas.
Working out.
Me, completing my GRIT workout, and him on the Peloton.
Don’t they give you a break for Christmas?
Nope, and I wouldn’t want it any other way.
This year it was bar hangs and burpees for Thanksgiving, a 5K + burpee/push-up/mountain climbers for Christmas Eve, and a kettlebell workout for Christmas day.
But, it’s a holiday!
Yes, I still workout on holidays.
And vacations. And my birthday, for that matter.
Once in a while, I’ll get a student in my PE class who asks me, on their birthday,
“It’s my birthday, I shouldn’t have to do the workout, right?!”
I’m not sure where this train of thinking comes from, but I don’t buy it.
What better way to celebrate your life, the fact that you lived to see another year, that your body is capable and strong, than to take care of it through movement.
While on vacation in Mexico a few years ago, Brett and I would do our morning workouts on the beach.
“Relax, you’re on vacation!!” Are the comments I’d sometimes get from others.
I get it, it’s different. It’s maybe not what others would do.
That’s okay.
Because for me, part of enjoying my life (and my holidays, vacations, and birthdays) means moving my body.
Getting my heart rate up and releasing endorphins.
Feeling strong and confident.
Staying committed to the goals I set out for myself.
Exercise improves just about every aspect of my life.
My body, obviously.
But also my mind, my relationships, and my career and business.
I’m all about building a life that I don’t want/need to escape from.
And building habits that serve me so much that I never want to take a “break” from doing them.
That’s what exercise is for me.
So I’ll continue to spend a small part of my holidays, vacations, and my birthday doing what I love and makes me feel empowered and confident.
Even if I get an eyebrow raise or two along the way.
