“Active change…”
Yesterday was running day inside the GRIT challenge.
Running is not my favorite.
It ranks down there with burpees for me.
But every Tuesday, for the past 10 weeks, I’ve run some version of a 5K.
GRIT is a physical program within the StoryAthlete community, yet the goal is to strengthen our minds.
To develop mental toughness and defeat our lesser selves through daily workouts, accountability, and community.
And if you miss one day, you’re out.
Plus you lose your team points, potentially making them ineligible to win the challenge.
Meaning, I have no choice but to run every Tuesday.
The 5K for the past 5 weeks has included stopping every ½ mile to complete push-ups, burpees, and mountain climbers.
I’ve been doing the running portion on a treadmill.
Because I’ve found on the treadmill, I have no choice.
I put the speed where I want it, and make my legs keep up.
However, yesterday I found out that I do have a choice.
And when it comes to choices, our mind is sneaky with ways that it limits us.
Yesterday, I decided to follow an interval training run from the Peloton app with my favorite instructor, Robin.
I usually ride the Peloton with Robin in the mornings, and I was excited to see that she had a tread workout.
I pressed play, and right away knew that she was going to take me to an uncomfortable place.
To start, the “jogging” portion was about my speed for the entire previous 5Ks.
Along with her upbeat music and no bull-shit attitude, she made me alternate between runs of 8mph and sprints at 10mph the entire time.
I actually looked forward to getting off the treadmill every ½ mile to do burpees.
I was gassed at the end. The result?
A 5K+Push up/Mountain climber/Burpee PR of 29 minutes. Almost 2 minutes faster than last week.
That’s about how fast I ran my first 5K 10 weeks ago WITHOUT all the extra movements.
It took a change.
Active change, to be specific.
It’s a no-brainer that if I would have set my pace to my normal 7.5mph the entire time, I would have gotten the same result. The same time.
I have to be intentional about creating the conscious evolution that I want in life.
Not just by pushing my limits physically in workouts.
But in my mind, by constantly reading, learning, and writing.
In my business through trial and error. DOING rather than just learning.
In my relationships through seeking quality time and communication.
It all requires active, conscious effort.
Because nothing changes if nothing changes.
