“The proven path…”

 Shared by Breanne Smedley

In high school, a couple of friends and I decided to go hiking.

But, not in the typical way that I hike nowadays.

You know, by researching the hike and the destination, then setting out on the path that will lead me there.

Instead, we decided to just enter the wooded spot near the area that we hoped would eventually lead to a pretty waterfall, maybe a lake, or a river to rest and play in.

Looking back, I see this as incredibly dangerous, but at the time, I saw this as the only true way to experience adventure!

Why find a trail when you can forge your own?!

We will experience and see so much more!

As expected, we got turned around pretty quickly. Without a trail guiding us, all the trees, rocks, and groundcover started to look the same.

We kept making our way up, trying to follow the sound of water.

We eventually did come to a section of river that looked good to take a break-in.

The only problem? To get to it, we had to find a way down a 10-foot cliffside.

My thought was to shimmy down a tree that was growing out of the side of the cliff standing between us and the glorious water below.

In doing so, I lost my footing and slid down the tree, leaving both the insides of my upper arms scraped and bloodied.

We rinsed off in the water, then spent the next two hours making our way back up the cliff and zig-zagging our way back to where we started.

All while trying to keep my wounds protected and not give in to the little voice in the back of my head playing out scenarios of still being lost in the woods come nightfall.

We eventually found our way back and spent the car ride back replaying the adventure and laughing about our pitfalls and the terrible sense of direction.

When I look back at that memory, I see it for what it is: an adventure.

But also, slightly stupid.

We potentially put ourselves in danger, and we didn’t have a plan on how we were going to get to our destination.

So, it was no surprise that we ran into multiple pitfalls and didn’t make it to the top.

Paths and trails are there for a reason.

They are proven ways to get to the top.

It’s the same with any result we want in life, business, relationships, or health.

We can get lost trying to chase what we think will lead to success.

Through guessing and trying to take the exciting and adventurous path.

The unknown, and unproven path.

But to be truly successful, to get results, we are diligent in following what works.

A method.

A documented approach.

A proven path.

And more often than not, that path is right in front of us, waiting for us to trust that it will take us to the top.
