“The Staircase Hustle…”

“The Staircase Hustle…”

It used to be a choice… elevator or stairs.

I would arrive at my office, usually in heels, carrying a heavy computer bag (these Dell work computers are no joke!), a lunch bag, a water bottle, and a coffee.

And I’d walk in the door and think, “hop on the elevator or take the stairs like I should?”

Arrive in comfort or arrive out of breath?
My decision was probably a 50-50 split.

Until one day when I was lamenting… ok, maybe complaining… about not having enough time to work out like I used to.

Life has been much fuller in recent months as Breanne and I are working on growing Mindfluent® Leadership and building our ConfidenceFactor™ Challenge. And I’ve started coaching clients for my professional coaching certification program.

Unfortunately, working out has taken a backseat.
In fact, I’ve had to be much more intentional about my own self-care.

It’s SO easy to let that go in favor of more “productive” activities.

As I was complaining, I decided I could at least make the most out of the little opportunities I have to get in more steps or get my heart rate up.

I committed to the Staircase Hustle!

Every day, regardless of what I’m wearing, how late I am to my first meeting, or how I’m feeling… I hustle up the stairs with the goal of being completely out of breath by the time I reach the fourth floor.

Four floors aren’t that much. So, I really have to book it to reach my goal.

And I get a little arm workout on the way, as I load up one arm in order to hold the handrail with others. The last thing I need is to fall UP the stairs!

As I walk by my team, saying good morning through gasping breaths, they all know the deal… the Staircase Hustle! It’s turned into a fun morning routine and conversation!

This isn’t my ideal form of exercise, but at least it’s something I can count on every day, every time I walk up those stairs.

And it feels good between the times when I can fit in other “traditional” workouts on my Peloton bike or the 12 Mins of Death workout with my StoryAthlete crew.

I really believe and know that self-care is absolutely foundational to having the energy needed to show up every day, caring for others, and going after my dreams. And physical activity is part of this.

So, I’m working on fitting it in where I can, when I can, and as best I can.

And that’s better than the alternative of just letting it go, and giving up.

I’m on the lookout for other small “hustles” I can add to my day… some easy ones are parking further away from the office and standing more hours than I sit in my cubicle.

What other ideas do you have for me?!
