“Knowing vs doing…”

 Shared by Breanne Smedley

Growing up, my sister and I used to spend a week of every summer visiting my grandparents who lived in Wilsonville.

It was fun, because they lived on a golf course so when we were old enough, we would spend that week at golf camp learning how to play my grandpa’s favorite pastime.

One day, after a golf camp, we were at the driving range practicing our new skills.

I kept “topping” the ball when I’d hit. Meaning my club would skim the top of it and it would bounce and roll just a few feet.

My grandpa kept telling me, “You have to stay low when you hit. Stay seated for the whole ride!”

Finally, after another topped ball, and another “Stay seated for the whhooolllleeee ride!” I said,

“I KNOW Grandpa!”

“Then why aren’t you doing it?” He asked.

Good point…

There is a big difference between knowing and doing.

While knowing is the accepted first step in learning a skill, that alone will never lead to mastery.

We all know that eating healthy and exercising leads to optimal health. But without actually doing it, we can’t expect to achieve any results.

“I know, I know. I need to stop eating so much crap!”

“Then why aren’t you doing it?” I’ve asked myself many times…

The difference, I’ve found comes down to choice.

As Kristina and I have been diving deeper into the area of confidence lately, we’ve run into the same dichotomy.

We’ve researched, read, and experienced that increased confidence comes down to a healthy inner voice, an energized body, and strong social connections.

We know confidence is a skill that can be developed.

And we know how to do it.

We can have all the knowledge in the world, though.

However, answering my grandpa’s question is entirely different.

In his words, “Why aren’t you doing it?”

It comes down to the choice we all have to make.

Just know, or do?
