“Learn Something New…”

During my first Team Tag-up (what most call a ‘staff meeting’ or simply boring!) with my new team a few months ago, they looked at me with wide eyes when I said…

“Once a month, we’ll take turns teaching each other something new!
20mins or so.
Whatever topic you want that betters us as humans, employees, friends, etc.”

My old team started this practice a couple years ago when our Intern at the time had a great idea!
He would teach the rest of us how to make our LinkedIn profiles.

It was informative, interesting, and helpful.
And the idea stuck.

We’ve had some of the most interesting conversations about:
-> Servant Leadership
-> EXCEL Pivot Tables
-> Building self-managed work teams
-> Mental Models and the Ladder of Inference
-> Persuasion
-> How to use OneNote
-> Productivity Hacks
-> Unconscious Biases

And I’m really excited about where my new team is taking this!

So far, we’re learning about airplanes and cryptocurrency.
And I volunteered to share on the book Quiet in a couple months.

I love this practice not just because we all get to learn something new, but more so because it gets all of us thinking about the knowledge we just hold inside (for one reason or another).

I believe that when we have the opportunity to experience, research, and learn that it is then our responsibility to share that knowledge with others.

Maybe it’s through a more formal venue like a Team Tag-Up.
Or maybe it’s on a whim when hearing someone’s struggle and offering to share what you’ve learned on the topic.

Sharing opens us up to serving others and building relationships, rather than hoarding information in isolation.
