“Routine: Zero, Excuses-Kristina: Five…”
Many of you know that I’ve been working hard at building an enabling morning routine.
Waking up at 4:45am.
Enjoying a cup of coffee in the quiet.
Meditating.
Reading.
Writing.
And making it (on a good day) to work by 7:30.
Well, this week, ‘excuses-Kristina’ has totally won.
I didn’t wake up for my morning routine one single time.
Not one!
I have plenty of excuses:
“Daylight savings time kicks my butt.”
“I had to be able to work at 6:30 in two days.”
“I’m exhausted from a busy week”
While all of these reasons are true, there is no room for excuses. I will always have seemingly valid reasons why I don’t wake up at 4:45am.
I mean, that’s just way too early.
It’s so easy to come up with a reason why I didn’t get out of bed. Especially when we have the most comfortable bed in the world!
The whole reason I moved my most important practices to the morning was because I couldn’t count on having the time in the evening.
And the same was true this week.
I didn’t complete my morning routine practices and in fact didn’t do a single one after work either. Well, let me take that back… I didn’t miss out on my cup of coffee! I just had to drink it while getting ready.
I know you’re thinking that this is no big deal.
So, let me share a little about why an enabling morning routine is so important to me.
Changing my morning routines and habits is the first step in changing my life.
It improves self- discipline and mental toughness, and sets the tone for the rest of my day.
My most important practices are set up for the morning, showing their value and prioritization, allowing me to complete them before many people are out of bed. Not leaving them up to the chance of not getting done.
And I made a commitment to myself.
Oftentimes we have the integrity to our commitments to others, but are willing to break our integrity with ourselves. Being committed to this routine and following through is showing respect for myself in keeping my word.
So, yes, I was tired this week.
I had to be at work early.
And I’m sure there are more reasons I could think of.
I’m now spending the weekend catching up on my reading and writing. And going forward, no excuses will be accepted.
