“Just show up…”
Shared by Breanne Smedley
When left to its own devices, my mind has a powerful way of getting me out of things.
Of finding loopholes to let myself off the hook for habits I’m trying to create.
Take working out, for example.
In order to eliminate the choice associated with “will I workout today, or not?”, or “what should I do today for a workout?” I schedule when and where I workout at the beginning of the week.
M-12p CrossFit
T-3:30p CrossFit
W-12p CrossFit
T-12p Orange Theory
F-12p CrossFit
So, it becomes a matter of looking at the day and showing up to what I have planned.
Simple. No thinking. Just show up.
Sometimes, though, I let my mind get involved.
Usually, this happens when the workout of the day is posted and I don’t like what I see.
Overhead squats? Bike? Thrusters? I don’t like those movements…
Then, the loopholes start.
“It’s okay to skip today because I’m going to do it tomorrow”
“What difference does it make if I break my habit this one time?”
“I’ve been so good at being consistent, it’s okay for me to not go today.”
“I’ve already showered today, I can’t work out.”
“It’s a sunny day outside. We don’t get these often this time of year, it would be a shame to spend it in the gym!”
And so on…
Until I either give in to one of my loopholes and justify my reasoning,
Or…
I show up.
Really, that’s all I have to do.
Because I know, no matter what thoughts are floating around in my mind:
“I hate this workout.”
“I don’t feel like doing it.”
“I don’t know how to do this movement.”
If I just get my butt there, the work will follow.
Don’t think about the workout. Don’t think about how I’ll feel. No relying on “will power.” I don’t even have to plan anything!
Just show up.
And the more I do it, the harder it becomes not to.
