“Wake-Up Call”

Shared by Kristina Smedley

“Enthusiastic about anything that catches their interest, they approach life with a sense of curiosity, optimism, and adventure.

Gifted at brainstorming and synthesizing information. Rapidly organizing their internal and external resources in pursuit of their desires.”

Words from my personality type indicator results.
In many ways recognize myself in these statements.

Then, I got to the Wake-Up Call section:

“The tendency is to become dissatisfied with whatever they are doing or are currently experiencing.

The grass is always greener on the other side.

This wandering attention has serious consequences. They do not stay with anything long enough to experience it deeply or get any real satisfaction from it.”

Dang!
The truth hurts sometimes.

And this is the truth.

I have so many interests. So many ideas.
Thinking becomes anticipating. Next comes a wandering mind. Suddenly I’m on to a whole new topic.

As I look back through some of the stories I’ve shared with you, I find myself documenting this aspect of myself:

  • the different businesses I’ve started over the years
  • starting so many things at the same time
  • wanting a new workout routine every year or so

I used to really like this spontaneous and excitable aspect of my personality.
It comes with a lot of drive and optimism.
It finds creative solutions and has the energy to bring them to life.

But, I’ve also come to realize that when left on autopilot, this part of me will create an excuse to give up and switch gears.

And not even feel bad about it.
A new shiny object offered more promise. More potential.

With every one of our strengths, there is also a shadow.

In my case, my strengths of curiosity, ideation, optimism, and energy must be combined with a constant awareness of the triggers that lead to prematurely switching gears and not seeing the right things through.

Otherwise, one day I’ll look back on my life and see many great ideas.
I’ll see a lot of adventures and activities.
But nothing meaningful brought into being.

And I refuse to write that as my life story.
