“Fitness = Entertainment”

I’m always impressed by the people who do the same workout day after day, year after year.

I have friends who have been doing CrossFit 4x per week for years.

Friends who run 60+ miles per week, and have been doing it months on end.

Tonight at happy hour, a friend told me that she “loves treadmill running.”

I think she’s the only person I know that loves to run on a treadmill!

She just runs, clears her mind, and thinks. That’s all she needs.

Somehow, I got the ‘I need to be entertained while working out’ gene.

Every year or so, I get bored with whatever workout I’m doing and want something new.

I’ve tried:
– Don’t work out at all (fyi… that only works in your 20s)
– 24hr Fitness Personal Training
– Rec Volleyball
– Crossfit
– RepX
– Orange Theory
– Lagree Pilates
– Peloton

Sometimes, I wish I could just go for a run and call it a day. To not spend any mental energy on planning workouts. To just do it, like we just brush our teeth and get ready in the morning.

But no. Eventually, I always crave doing something new. Having a new experience. Mixing it up.

I’ve been reflecting on this. What about me makes me so different from them?

Right now, I love my Peloton bike and Ally Love is my favorite instructor, but I’m also feeling like I want to lift more weights.

I want to be in a class to get to chat with people.
I miss being strong. More fit.

But honestly, I think the problem is more in my operating system. Instead of thinking of fitness as a foundational part of my day, like washing my face and brushing my teeth, I think of fitness as some form of entertainment.

Because of its entertainment, it can be swapped out easily or even traded for other [less healthy] forms of entertainment, like happy hour or watching tv.

Then, when I don’t get the results I want, I feel the need to swap up the entertainment rather than double down on my foundational commitment to my health and well-being.

Without spending the time to reflect on my past experiences and my current feelings, I would likely just continue to hop around from workout to workout.

Understanding what’s just below the surface is the first step in enabling healthier mental programs and healthier routines.

Now, just like making the choice to get out of bed in time for my enabling morning routine, I am making the choice that working out is a foundational habit.

I am committed to it in order to take care of my body, to push my mental toughness, and to feel more confident and energized.

And that is all more than enough. There’s no need for some new form of entertainment. Or the new and exciting fitness trend.

Just do the work.
