“70-20-10…”
Shared by Kristina Smedley
Yesterday, I stated: “To change my life experience, I simply need to change the story I write for myself.”
I’ve truly learned this over the last five months.
Not through taking a class or finding a mentor.
Although this helps.
I’ve learned this by doing. By having the experience.
Through reflecting on who I want to be. Writing and sharing. Changing my behavior.
I’m shaping who I am.
Shaping my routines.
Building enabling habits.
70-20-10
Adult learning theory tells us that as adults we learn best in a program that includes 70% experience, 20% mentoring, and 10% formal education.
This is also how I lead my team and mentor others.
Last week, I moved to a new position and one of my old teammates now has the opportunity to lead the team.
I chatted with him this week. There’s a lot going on!
Things have exploded in the last week.
There’s way more work coming in than he has people to do it.
I wish I could help more.
That I had more documented info for him.
Or there was something I could have proactively taught him. Ensured he had the tools he needs.
But really, his current experience is going to help him more than I ever could.
He’ll try new things. Work through the challenges. Come up with new solutions that I never considered.
And I’ll always be here to bounce ideas off.
To brainstorm.
To provide feedback and coaching.
But, I’ll never have the direct answer to his challenges.
That will all come through his experience.
