“Turns out, you can…”

I used to think that if I had the time and money, I’d just keep going to college and get a bunch of degrees.

Wouldn’t it be cool to be able to say…

“I have degrees in Kinesiology, Business, Nutrition, Spanish, Education…

…and also Baking Science and Adventure Education!” Apparently, these are things…

In my mind, obtaining a degree meant that you were an expert. You know everything there is to know about that topic.

That would be true, maybe if we didn’t live in an evolving world. Where research is constantly uncovering more and more.

I know this especially to be true in the areas that I hold undergrads, and master's degrees.

Health, nutrition, and education are some of the fastest-changing fields there are.

Some of the concepts I learned in my education classes aren’t even in existence in classrooms anymore, and that was only six years ago that I graduated.

And nutrition research seems to be changing on the daily too.

“Red wine just as good as going to the gym,” article, anyone?

Despite this, I sometimes feel like this false belief holding me back.

Thoughts of,

“Well, I could start my own business, if only I had a business degree…”

“I could train others in the area of leadership, if only I could go back to school and get a master's in leadership…”

In reality, these are exactly what they seem.

Excuses.

Did you know, that there are other ways to obtain knowledge, other than going to college?

That you can become an expert in a field, without holding a degree?

And that your experience in an area, actually living it out and practicing it daily, is more valuable than someone telling you about that topic in a lecture?

This sticking point-the idea that I need a degree in order to know about a subject, was just a delay tactic.

Someday, when I have the time…

Someday, when I have the extra money…

Truth is, I have the time. Because what we value, we make time for.

And I don’t need $20K for another degree.

I need to learn from the experts in the field, the ones who are living it, doing it, and killing it.

And do you know what those experts do?

They write books and record podcasts.

So, I committed to learning from them.

I listen to business, entrepreneurial, and nutrition podcasts in the car from people like Tim Ferriss, Seth Godin, and Cassy Garcia. Even if it’s just driving 10 minutes to work.

I commit to reading every day, even if it’s only 20 minutes that I can squeeze in.

The process of being a lifelong learner doesn’t start and stop when the semester does.

And those little 30 minute chunks of learning add up, and allow me the confidence and opportunity to do what can be difficult, and sometimes impossible while sitting through hours and months of lectures:

Take action.

Learning without doing is pointless.

Turns out, you can learn, and more importantly, DO without another college degree.
