“I used to be a morning person…”
Shared by Kristina Smedley
It feels unreal to remember back on the days when my alarm would go off and I would jump out of bed and get moving.
I can even remember being this way in high school, while my brothers were serenaded by my dad in hopes to lure them out of bed.
“Ooohhhh boys… rise and shine!”
Well, somewhere along the way, all that changed.
Now, I’m a self-proclaimed “NOT A MORNING PERSON.”
The alarm goes off. The most terrifying sound I can find.
And still, I lay there in bed. Sometimes I fall completely back to sleep and then have to run to make it out of the house on time.
Wet hair. Slicked back ponytail. A weird outfit.
Not quite the look of a business professional!
Even worse, I’m then way behind on my desired morning routine and I have to try to find time throughout the day to make it up.
And I say ‘try’ because it’s nearly impossible to just ‘find time’. There’s not much extra of it laying around, waiting to be picked up!
So, I’ve been trying all sorts of life hacks to make myself get up.
– Only set one alarm and turn off the snooze option
– Have Sennad set the alarm and wake me up
– Put my phone/alarm across the room
– My next plan was to put the light on a timer so it would turn on and annoying me out of bed
– And, we even found curtains that can be on a timer so the light will come in (once this long dark winter is over)
Then, today my friend Ryan said something that really made me stop.
In response to someone wishing they were a morning person, he replied:
“A morning person is someone who set an alarm, and when it went off… they got out of bed. They didn’t hit snooze. They didn’t make an excuse. They didn’t continue to lay there. They got up. That’s a morning person. And, to make it easier, they started going to bed a little earlier. That’s called a choice. That has nothing to do with one’s DNA. So, set the alarm. And get the hell out of bed. Now you’re a morning person.”
I mean, could it really be that easy?
Decide that I value starting my day with a healthy routine and getting a jump start on the day while others are sleeping.
Go to bed a little earlier.
Then, simply make the choice to get out of bed.
It’s certainly better than the alternative, where I’ve been making such a big deal about this in my head, that it has become a ‘thing’.
Now the ‘thing’ is a problem that needs to be solved and I’m looking for all sorts of creative solutions to fight against my proclaimed “not a morning person” DNA.
I’m wasting mental energy. I’m wasting time that I want to dedicate to my own self-care. I’m not building routines that support and enable me.
So, starting now, I accept what has been happening and commit to having the integrity to my values and personal commitments.
Starting now, I choose to go to bed earlier and get up in time to complete and enjoy my enabling morning routine.
This isn’t another life hack. It’s simply a choice.
And with that… good night!
