“Adapt or die…”

Shared by Breanne Smedley

This weekend I was a spectator at a CrossFit competition.

A couple of people were handing out samples of some pre-workout (maybe post-workout, or during workout?) drink, and asked if I wanted to try a sample.

“Why not?!” I said. They handed me a small sample, and a sticker with the phrase:

Adapt or Die.

I drank the sample. They waited in anticipation for me to give me their thoughts on whatever “BCAA-BCBD blah blah” that I just had.

“Weeelllll?!” They asked.

“I love this sticker!” I replied.

Maybe not the answer they were looking for, but that phrase got me thinking.

I sometimes wonder to myself why I can’t just be content. Just be okay with where things are in the development of my mental and physical health, relationships, and career.

I paid for and earned an undergrad and master's degree, after all. I have a full-time job and a head coach position at a school that I love.

And I used to think that’s how it was supposed to work. It’s what the system tells us. Go to college. Get that degree (that in rare cases actually connects to your career). Get a job. Live for the weekends. Work hard, play hard.

But then, there’s me…

“Read another book on leadership and entrepreneurship?” How about watch Netflix instead.

“Listen to a podcast while in the car?” It would be easier just to turn on the radio.

“Spend disposable income on courses, programs, and immersions?” That money would go far in Mexico!

Now, don’t get me wrong. I’m also a believer in balance. Sometimes my choice IS to watch Netflix, listen to 107.5 (throwbacks!), and sip margaritas on a Mexican beach.

But, I find myself time and time again putting myself in challenging situations, on purpose.

What for?

Why embark on a new business journey when I already have a full-time job?

When I finally have time after the volleyball season, why join a 90 Day Immersion course on building a business through storytelling that will suck that time right back up?

Because of the burning desire, I have inside of me to never stay the same.

Adapt, or die.

When we challenge ourselves, we adapt to a new level.

It’s just like working out.

It’s why we push ourselves to beat our last PR. Because our body then adapts, and we set the bar higher.

When I challenge myself mentally, physically, in my relationships, and in my purpose and passion in life, I (little by little) create a new “me.”

And if I choose to not challenge myself and stay the same?

Then I’m left to live a life of mental weakness, excuses, selfishness, and worst of all:

Doing work that I’m not passionate about.

And to me, that might as well be death.

Kristina and I have started this Mindfluent Leadership journey because we both have a fire inside.

A fire that is burning with a desire to help empower women in the area of leadership and representation.

To bring up our young women with mindsets, abilities, and skills that will serve them rather than serve the system.

So, I will continue to push myself and seek out uncomfortable situations.

Because living a life of influence is what I’m after, and the alternative is not an option.
