“I’m bored…”

Shared by Breanne Smedley

There was a time in my life when I couldn’t stand to be bored.

I can remember that feeling well as a kid.

Usually at the end of a summer break.

The novelty had worn off.
After we had spent hours and days doing what kids do on summer vacation.

Swimming.
Sprinklers.
Exploring our wooded area in the back.

Then, to wake up one day and just not be interested in it.

“I’m bored!” I would tell my mom.

Her response was always along the lines of,

“Well, you could clean the bathroom! Or vacuum!”

Not quite the response I was looking for.

Some of that followed me into adulthood.

Getting bored with one thing, jumping to the next.

To the point where I just never slowed down enough to experience “boredom.”

In fact, I think it’s pretty normal for most people to avoid boredom, in the traditional sense of the word.

Of course, I don’t want to live my life bored of what I’m doing.

But, there’s an aspect of being boring that I’m actually seeking these days.

The boringness of a routine.

The boringness of doing the same thing, every day.

Of keeping a chain going, like the ones we used to make a Christmas to countdown the days.

Only now, every time I add a paper link, the chain grows.

The goal?

Don’t break the chain.

Working out.
Meditating.
Writing.
Eating wholesome foods.
Reading.

Yep, that list would sound really boring to the kid version of myself.

But now, it’s those things that create the exciting moments in my life.

That makes me feel more confident.

Help me show up as a more empathetic and energized teacher and coach.

Cultivate strong relationships with my family and friends.

Help build a profitable impact business.

So, I guess I am striving for boring.

If boring means consistency.

Commitment.

Grit.

Becoming the best version of myself.

If that’s the case.

Boring sounds exciting!
