“1 hour turns to 3…”
Shared by Breanne Smedley
"I’ll just be an hour,” I tell Brett as I retreat to the office, leaving him with Charlee to play.
“I just have to quickly do this thing on our website. Shouldn’t take too long.”
I’m not exactly sure what happens in our home office where I typically work, but it seems that time either speeds up, or doesn’t exist.
This past weekend being the prime example.
I seem to grossly underestimate the time that it takes to do anything tech-related.
I shouldn’t, considering that I have no idea what most acronyms that I’ve run into as Kristina and I build our business mean.
SMTP.
DNS.
RSS.
DIKM.
ISP.
SPF. (Apparently, this doesn’t stand for Sun Protection Factor in the tech world)
Trying to solve one problem quickly creates a new one.
Like trying to figure out how to automate an email.
Only to find out they’re all going to spam.
UGH!
Multiple Google searches.
Countless videos watched.
Chat with support.
The solution always feels like it’s “right around the corner.”
But I can’t quite figure it out.
And I don’t want to stop, for fear I’ll forget everything that I just tried to do.
It was in this rabbit hole on Saturday that I crashed our Mindfluent® Leadership website for a few hours trying to fix a problem totally unrelated.
Ok, now I have to figure out how to fix that.
Meanwhile, the hour I told Brett I would be gone working has turned into three.
“How did that happen?! I feel like I just started working!”
Now I have another problem to fix.
My frustration with tech and stubbornness to figure it out has now run over into my family.
Now Brett is a bit frustrated, that I haven’t been good on my word.
He has come to learn that “just an hour” doesn’t really mean that.
And it bothers him.
And it bothers me that I inadvertently have disrespected his time.
Our time, together.
Frustration, I’ve found, usually leads to more frustration.
And the more I dive in this frustrated state, the worse it gets.
Websites crash.
Relationships get tested.
Lesson learned.
Have the strength to walk away in those moments of frustration.
Things always seem to work better with a clear head, anyways.
