“Kick-off…”

  Shared by Breanne Smedley Today, I woke up with some butterflies in my stomach. That excited/nervous feeling that I would often get before my soccer or volleyball games. But today, I’m not playing in front of parents and fans. Instead, I’m kicking off a mental training program this afternoon with an intimate group of athletes who do. “I’m just going to go to my office for a bit to prep for tomorrow” I told Brett last night after Charlee went to bed. 30 minutes later, my desk looks like a small bomb went off. Books opened to highlighted and dog-eared sections. Papers strewn about with images, outlines, and notes. Multiple tabs up on my browser. To put this in perspective, I had already planned the outline of the program a week prior. A rough outline of topics and progression of skills players need in order to develop confidence and resiliency on and off the court. I leave room to be guided by the athletes, based on their needs. I had already meticulously planned our first meeting....

"Big, Bold, and Creative..."

Shared by Kristina Smedley ‘Imagine’… one of my favorite ways of being… and the chapter I just finished in Glennon Doyle’s book, "Untamed."   It also made me think back to an uncomfortable moment in the People Council meeting I lead last week in my corporate job... I popped up a slide titled "Big, Bold, and Creative" and encouraged my colleagues to join me in standing up to discover and take action in order to build a more diverse, inclusive, and equitable organization.   Immediately, I felt self-conscious… "Big, Bold, Creative"… these aren’t really the words of our corporate world.   Immediately, I recalled past "coaching" that I was being too soft. That I needed to be more firm and decisive in the words I used. But what would I have said instead… "Strategic, Aligned, Initiative"??   NO, that’s not what I am going for. I’m not looking to do another initiative like all the others, buried in bored and unenergized words, people, and actio...

"Am I an Antiracist?"

  Shared by Kristina Smedley The most direct answer is no. Unfortunately, I can’t say that I’ve been actively doing anything to fight against racism.   Yes, I’m kind and accepting, and empathetic. I’ve never considered myself a racist. I’ve never done anything racist intentionally. And I’ve done some work in the past on becoming mildly aware of my privilege. But do I embrace and embody antiracist values and views? Do I take antiracist actions?   This is something I’ve thought about and maybe even written about in the past. But have I done anything differently since then? No.   I continue to sit comfortably on the sideline as an empathetic observer. I continue to sit in my easy chair, watching what is going on around me.   A chair that is reserved for people who look like me, people of white privileged. As long as racism and white supremacy continue to go unchecked, ruining communities and lives, it’s safe to say that a majority of people who look like me (myself...
