“12 minutes…”

Shared by Breanne Smedley

The primary excuse that people have for not working out is lack of time.

I hear it frequently. I’ve even fallen victim to this false belief.

“I don’t have any extra time in my day to exercise. My day is packed.”

Which is why I love to expose my students to the effectiveness of short, high-intensity workouts in class.

A 4-minute tabata of burpees and squat jumps.

5 Rounds of 20 air squats, 10 push-ups, 5 burpees (usually completed within 5-10 minutes).

10 Minute AMRAP (As Many Rounds As Possible) of 20 mountain climbers, 20 jumping lunges, and a 50-meter sprint.

After all of these workouts, if done with maximum effort, my students are red in the face, sweaty, and breathing hard.

And after each of these short workouts, I remind them.

“That was only 8 minutes! Look how great of a workout you got. No equipment needed. Just a small amount of space, your body, and your effort.”

Because when my students leave my class after they’ve gained their “physical education credit,” I also want them to gain the understanding that we all have time to be active.

It’s a matter of priorities, yes.

Yesterday the screen time app on my phone said that I use social media an average of 30 minutes a day.

Woah! Can’t argue with data.

There’s 30 minutes right there that could be spent more productively.

But it’s also a matter of shifting our minds from believing we have to spend 1 hour or more at the gym, with special equipment, to “get a good workout.”

Yesterday, I didn’t have time to hit a class like I normally do workout.

Meetings, appointments, errands, etc. All the normal excuses one might typically give to not work out.

But, I had 15 minutes to spare between leaving school and picking up Charlee.

As part of a 28-day StoryAthlete Challenge I’m in, there are 12-minute workouts to complete, twice a week.

The first one was posted yesterday morning.

A baseline workout of 2 minutes of push-ups, air squats, sit-ups, and burpees with a 1-minute rest between each.

Perfect.

I found some space in the gym and got after it.

12 minutes later, I was sweaty and my watch said my heart rate was 150.

12 minutes was all it took.

We are all busy. We all have no time to waste.

I’m willing to bet we all have a spare 12 minutes, though.

No excuses.
