“Snow people…”

I’ve always wanted to be one of those people who enjoy winter sports.

The thought of packing the family up in an SUV and heading for the powdery mountain.

All-clad with our layers of wintery clothes. A wool base layers to wick away moisture. A nice fleece insulating layer to retain heat. And a shell outer layer to keep us dry and protected from the wind. Hats, gloves, warm, sturdy boots.

Time to “hit the slopes.” “Traverse the backcountry.” “Shred some pow.” Then hunker down inside with a warm beverage.

Sounds nice.

But, our track record with trying to be snow people hasn’t been great.

Don’t get me wrong, I love the snow. It’s the trying to do things in it that gets complicated.

I’ve been snowboarding a handful of times. Normally it ends up being a day full of trying not to hurt anyone getting off the chair lift. How do people make it look so easy to get off these things?!

Then falling, twisting, and tumbling down a hill. And awkwardly walking with one foot strapped in aboard, and one foot out back to the chair lift. Repeat.

At least the lift up the mountain is nice.

And, all those layers. They make you hot. But it’s freezing outside, so you can’t really take them off. And if you did, where would you put them? Walk all the way back to the car…which is in an overflow parking lot a mile away? Nope.

So I continue the sweating, tumbling, and awkward walking. Because of those snow passes and gear? Not what you’d call cheap!

Then there was the time Brett and I went snowshoeing. Traipsing through the powder, breathing heavily, sweating through all the layers.

“How long have we been going?!”

“It’s been 5 minutes…”

Some cross country skiers came up behind us not too far in. We thought it’d be a nice break to chat with some other people on the trail. We stopped and turned around.

“Hey there!”

“Stay off our tracks!” They shouted as they glided by.

I guess we are supposed to walk off to the side? Wherewith each step our legs sink into three feet of snow. Only to have to bring that leg back up and out of the snow to sink into another step.

They make this look much more enjoyable in the magazines…

Our latest “adventure” happened just last weekend. We decided we would try the snowshoeing thing again, only this time with Charlee.

We bundled up in all the layers. Secured Charlee in one of those snowsuits that made her look like Randy from A Christmas Story. Piled in the car, and headed for a snowshoeing trail I had heard about near Mt. Saint Helens.

We had to turn on the AC about 20 mins in. Maybe you’re not supposed to wear all the layers until you get out of the car?

About an hour and a half later, Google Maps said that we had reached the trailhead.

Only, the parking lot was empty. It was pouring down rain. And there was no snow.

Even the snow itself is escaping us!

I guess we should take the hint. We just aren’t “snow people.”
