“Unhelpful-chatter … “

Shared by Kristina Smedley

To improve people’s lives. To lead change in our communities. To protect. To serve. To change the world.

I know many of you are like me and see your purpose as being of service to something much greater than yourself.

Some of you are working with local non-profits; maybe you’re a nurse, a police officer, a fireman, or a teacher. Some, like Breanne and I, as passionate about creating strong and effective leadership in our schools and businesses, and creating positive change in our communities.

This desire to impact and serve the larger good is a source of never-ending energy and passion. It’s a source of deep personal joy and fulfillment.

Just reflecting and writing about this passion makes me feel excited!

And then… this critical, judgmental voice in my head pops up, filled with unhelpful-chatter.

“You don’t know how to write stories… and why would anyone want to read them.”
“Wanting to do something big and impactful is different than DOING it. And how will you ever do it.”
“You aren’t a leadership expert; so many people are way more qualified.”
“Don’t be too vulnerable, people will judge.”
“Be perfect; that’s what’s expected of you.”
“Don’t stand out; they don’t like that.”

In an effort to protect me and maintain the status quo… this critic tries to hold me back from reaching my potential and following my dreams.

Does this sound familiar???

I know you have this critic in your head too, but your unhelpful-chatter might sound very different from mine.

Thankfully, we don’t have to let this critic rule our lives. We’ll never totally get rid of this unhelpful-chatter, but we can definitely fight back.

First, we have to become aware of this little (or sometimes screaming) critic.
And then we have to choose to fight back and to prevail.

I’ve become more and more aware of this over the last few years and have really been working to put this chatter back in its place.

And, I can honestly say that it’s working.

I recognize the voice now and can tell it to shut up.
I hear what it’s telling me, and then remember the positive feedback I’ve received from friends and family.

The more I follow my dreams and put myself outside my comfort zone, the more confident I am, and the quieter this critic becomes.

You can do this too!

If you ever want to chat, shoot me a note. I would love to share more about my journey and help you on yours.
